Poor In America Is Paradise Compared to Other Countries

Rush had a bit of a juxtaposition today that I thought was funny - first a graph showing that poor people in the US aren't that badly off - they have TVs, VCRs, Refridgerators, Air Conditioning (this is the poor who receive assistance from the government, by the way, not the homeless, most of whom are homeless because of some untreated mental disorder).

But then after that, he goes on to say how awful it is that 50% of Americans are poor!

Which it is, by the way - although one must qualify the definition of poor. These days, families making $40,000 a year are allowed to receive foodstamps or other welfare aid! That's just ridiculous.

Why are so many Americans poor these days? Well, one problem is the rise of one-parent, in particular one-mother homes. It's extremely hard to get an education and get a well-paying job when you get pregnant at age 15 and drop out of school to raise your kid. And a vast percentage of girls - mostly blacks to date but with whites quickly catching up! are having these illegitimate children.

Somewhat of a catch-22. Will these girls stop getting pregnant if it is made known to them that they will get no welfare? Probably not. The reasons why many girls get pregnant have only a little to do with getting on the dole for the rest of their lives (although when it comes to athletes and girls, I'd say the percentage skews the other way!) but rather other psychological pressures - it used to be embarrassing to not be a virgin until you were married...now if you're still a virgin at 15 there's something wrong with you - you're clearly not attractive to boys or you're gay. And so on.
