And it's true.
Well, it's a sad story, that I repeat below, in more ways than one. This is the United States of America, and we can't figure out how to save the jobs of the working people? (Because you know the administrators - the people at the top who make $100,000 a year as opposed to a teacher's $30,000 a year, won't be laid off.)
Story #1: Teacher Used as a Prop by Obama Gets Laid Off.
RUSH: You see a story like this and you want to laugh. And then you say to yourself, it wouldn't be cool to laugh, and then you're overcome with you still want to laugh. This is from the Wall Street Journal. It was buried in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday. "Teacher Who Served as Symbol of Jobs Measure Gets Laid Off." It's just delicious. "For a while, it looked like a federal measure aimed at supporting teachers and other state and local workers had helped save Amanda VanNess's job. It turned out it was only a temporary reprieve. In July, the 25-year-old Ms. VanNess lost her job teaching kindergarten at Pickett Elementary School in Toledo, Ohio, as a result of cuts that came after voters rejected an income-tax increase aimed at shoring up a budget deficit at the Toledo Public School District." Once again, there were no other places to cut in all of the Toledo budget, only the teachers, only the cops, only the firemen, as is de rigueur.
"In August, the White House had contacted Ms. VanNess's union and invited her to Washington to watch as the House, in a special one-day session, passed a $26 billion plan to save teachers' jobs, and then to stand by President Barack Obama as he signed the bill in the Oval Office," and the Journal runs that picture, a picture of Obama signing it with his left hand. By the way, left-handedness in males, they've now found out is an indication of poor potty training in the formative years.
Anyway, the teacher is standing looking at Obama sign this legislation. "'The idea was, with this bill passing, it was going to give teachers a better chance of being called back,' Ms. VanNess said. That's not how it was sold to the American people at the time. We were told the money would be used to make sure no teachers lost their jobs. Remember? We were told specifically this $26 billion, above and beyond the original Porkulus, was so teachers wouldn't lose their jobs. And remember, we tracked it, we followed it. And the Los Angeles Unified School District said, (paraphrasing) "Yeah, we're happy for the money, but we're not gonna spend it on hiring teachers. We're gonna hold onto the money and make sure that don't have to lay anyone off. But we're not gonna be hiring anybody."
"Ms. VanNess's district received $7.6 million of federal funds. And the day before school started in late August, the school district called Ms. VanNess back to work, on a one-year basis, teaching second grade. But even with the injection of federal dollars, the district's budget troubles have led it to increase class sizes, cut athletics programs, fire crossing guards and reduce bus services." Fire crossing guards? So now they are putting children at risk crossing the street? Kids are dying everywhere out there, folks, under this regime. They're dying everywhere from sugared soft drinks to now the crossing guards are gone. The stimulus couldn't save them. "Some parents have responded by pulling their children from Toledo's public schools. High unemployment in the area also is prompting some families to move away. The upshot is that with enrollment down by 5.4% this fall from last year, the school district just put through another round of cuts: Ms. VanNess was laid off again last week."
So the $26 million stimulus money that she watched the House pass and watched Obama sign, she was the symbol of this money saving her job, she's out, after one or two weeks of the school year, along with the crossing guards, and whoever knows what else. You know what's in it 'til you sign it. It's just like Pelosi with the health care. You don't know what's in it until he signs it. You don't know what's in it 'til we pass it. So here's this woman used as a prop, something the Democrats commonly do. She's the symbol of Democrat Party compassion, the symbol of this regime making sure that no jobs will be lost, union jobs, teacher jobs. She's front and center signing and watching Obama sign. After two weeks she's gone, because her real purpose came and went. Her value is not as a teacher. Her value to Obama was not as a teacher. Her value was as a photo-op prop, and she played the role well. And they managed to get the story buried in the Saturday Wall Street Journal, one of the least-read of the entire week issues or editions of the Wall Street Journal. And the teachers are laid off because student enrollment went down, not because they didn't have enough money, but because enrollment went down because people are fleeing Toledo
