USA: Last stand of capitalism on Earth

I listen to BBC Radio 7, which is a digital radio station out of England. They air comedies, dramas, science fiction, etc.

Playing last week was a comedy called Ladies of Letters Say No, starring Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth Bucket of Keeping Up Appearances) and Pauline Collins (Sybil Fawlty, Fawlty Towers).

The plot of the story is that an "evil capitalist" wants to take over a hospital and..make money at it! (And it's funny, I'm not sure if the author of this series was actually trying to "do down" capitalism or not, because the hospital before the capitalist guy got into the act was infested with rats and required the patients to clean up there own rooms. (Britain is on the National Health, you know.) But somehow even that was preferable to letting a capitalist get into the hospital to make money.

(And it must be pointed out that one of the actresses, Pauline Collins, is a socialist, at least according to her bio at Wikipedia. But then, England is a socialist country so that's to be expected.)

Another subplot was that Patricia Routledge's character, Vera Small, had an "adopted" grandchild who was actually an illegal immigrant from Africa. (I missed the Ladies of Letters Goes Global episode which doubtless explained how this came about.)

But it was interesting to listen to this show in light of what's going on in the US. Later on I'll post the excerpts from the show which talk about capitalism.

But if you want to see how socialist medicine works, just check out the headlines in such British papers as The Daily Mail:
