The bravery of Saudi Arabian women

Rush was making a joke today about the IOC relenting and letting a Saudi Arabian judoka wear her hair covering while fighting in her match. Usually judoka's - that's a "judo player" or participant - doesn't wear anything on their head because it could get entangled in the hands of someone trying to throw her and cause an injury...

But that's the only way this female athlete from Saudi would be allowed to participate by her country.

Ever seen Saudi women - or Muslim women in general - trying to run? They've got to wear full body gear - no inch of flesh showing anywhere except their faces.

Ever seen the full-body swimsuit they have to wear if they want to go swimming?

I have nothing but admiration and respect for any Muslim woman who risks her life - yes, she risks her life - to become an athlete.

There was a story in the last summer Olympics, some Islam woman wanted to compete.

I paraphrase, but it was something like, "Wouldn't you be proud of her if a Saudi Arabian woman won a medal?"

And the response was, "Hell no. She would have disgraced herself by appearing in public and she deserves to die."

The suicide rate of women who lived in secular Islamic countries - that have turned into Sharia-law ruled countries - has trebled. That's because where once they were free - they could leave their house when they wanted and do what they wanted - that's all over. Now, they can't leave their house without a male relative, they can't drive (women in Saudi can't drive), and if their husband suspects them of being unfaithful...he gets to cut off their nose or throw acid on them and gets away with it!
