Fill 'er up every couple of days!

I'd had a long drive on Saturday, over to a city with higher gas then where I live, so when I returned home late that night, it was with a nearly empty gas tank.

But I wasn't worried, and I was expecting to buy gas at $3.29, which is what it had been at my nearest gas station for about a month.

Well, things came up, so today was the first time I'd had a chance to stop at a gas station. But I'm almost sure that yesterday, gas was still at $3.29.

But then the fall out from the debt "deal" came, and today when I filled up my gas tank, it cost me $3.42 a gallon. So a 13 cents rise in one day, and I'm sure it's not the first rise we'll see as this summer continues.

I'm not really worried about the cost of gas for myself. I can afford to fill up my car every day and not really notice it. But what does have me worried is all the other people, who would normally be out driving, stopping in at tourist spots, or campgrounds, buying gas, buying souvenirs, and so on, who won't be doing it anymore because they can't afford the gas...or are simply too afraid to take vacations and spend money they may need later.

A couple of years ago I went for a drive across half the country, and one thing I noticed was that most of the blue signs, that announced "food here", "tourist attraction there" had lots of squares of brigher blue on them, where a sign had been taken down because that business was no longer in business. Probably they'd all been around for 40 years or more, but with gas prices over $3 a gallon for so long...it's cutting into people's travel.

Which is of course what the environmentalists want. Social engineering by way of economics. People can't afford to drive anymore, so they don't drive. And the fact that it's a domino effect that kills other businesses as well...well, who cares about that?

There was another interesting event on my drive from a couple of years ago. At that time I lived in Virginia, and I drove back into the state on the day they closed about half of their road side rest areas, turning Virginia officially into the "Hold It" state.
