An independent view of the politics of the day, using the Rush Limbaugh radio program for a springboard. I agree with much of Limbaugh's analyses of political events, American exceptionalism, and so on, but disagree with a lot, too.

Are Americans Educated Enough To Make The Right Choices?
In the Wyoming Daily News today, there was a news report that 18% of high school students who intend to go to college - will need remedial classes in at least one subject area or more - either math, science, english.
According to the article, these tests results (from the SATs) did not include those who did not want to go to college, only those who did. And 80% of these kids do not have the education needed to do so!
Of course, that 18% is actually an improvement, and educators here are really proud of it. In the previous year, the percentage of kids who were ready to go to college was only 15%!
Well, I can understand how it is. Take the admittedly small sample size of my 13 year old nephew. He's spent the entire summer playing video games, interspersed with an hour each week at his Boy Scout pack. He's not interested in school, he does the bare minimum of chores around the house - he clears off the table after dinner - to earn his allowance, and if he wants something his parents buy it for him. I don't think he even knows what the word "please" means, and he certainly doesn't know the words "thank you." (But then, neither does my own brother and he's 50. Something about guys and the way they're raised, I guess.)
Anyway, all that rant ends up with the following conclusion - how can the US citizenry make any kind of intelligent decision on who should be running this country, what our economic problems are, and so on, whem most of them barely have an the equivalent of an 8th grade education? (Times and Newsweek are written for an 8th grade reading level.)
