Do 1,024 People, Nationwide, Speak For You?

CBS News head a headline at their Political Hotsheet webpage: Obama approval rating falls below 50 percent
Rush and Hannity will rejoice at this, but read the fine print at the bottom of the article - the poll talked to 1,024 people, via phone, nationwide.

The number 1,024 is interesting, as are the dates, " interviewed by telephone June 3-7, 2011". Because that's the exact same number of people, and exact dates, where a poll was taken which was then reported with the headline, "Most Republicans don't want Palin to run."

Did the Pollsters talk to 1,024 different people on these three days? Or was only the subsegment of Republican voters, out of these 1,024 people polled, used to decide "should Palin run." In which case, that would be much less than 1,024 people.

And indeed, checking the other Poll results, "Most want troops in Afghanistan reduced", which also spoke to 1,024 people and was carried on over those 3 days.... all these poll questions were asked of the same 1,024 people.

Bottom line - polls are useless. A sample segment of 1,024 people of a population of millions? I do not think so.
