Let's Make Business Owners Limit Michelle's Shopping Sprees

Apparently the EU has the power to prevent the President and First Lady of Syria from spending money in their countries.
From Yahoo News:
EU could limit Syrian first lady’s lavish shopping sprees
European foreign ministers due to meet Friday in Brussels are expected to slap new sanctions on the dictator's wife.

The sanctions, if agreed, would mean the British-born Asma al-Assad "will no longer be able to travel to the EU or buy from EU-based shops, in her own name," Reuters reports. The proposed new measures come as the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Wednesday to endorse a statement pledging support for former U.N. chief Kofi Annan's peace mediation efforts in Syria.

Presumably they can do this because the woman is "British born" - if she were French born or Syrian born does this mean they'd have no right to prevent her from spending money?

This is actually rather troubling. Yes you may not agree with the Syrian leader or his politics. And yes the woman seems to be like Imelda Marcos and plenty of other wealthy women who spend money on frivolties while her people starve (but let us not forget that guys also have their frivolties - cars, cigars, prostitutes, etc). But the money they're spending is their money - what right does some other country have to say, "No - you can't buy anything from us."

This is a slippery slope. How soon will it be before someone's name gets on the Racist list, here in the US, and then all of a sudden you aren't allowed to buy food at your local grocery store, or gas and so on.

We seem headed in that direction. THere was the case a week ago where some college band members chanted "Where's your green card" at a Puerto Rican basketball player. (Puerto Rico being part of the US - he's an American and doesn't need a green card, mark you). The people who chanted this were not just told - "Okay, guys, that was insensitive, not to mention stupid. You're going to a sensitivity class." Nope - their scholarships were actually taken away from them!

Don't get me wrong - I don't condone racism, regardless of what skin color is practicing it - but having your means of going to school taken away from you because you were trying to rattle someone as he was making free throws? That's draconian.

But to the point of the post as explained in my header - can we do something similar with Michele and Barack? Both of those folks are earning money paid to them out of our tax dollars. Why should we have to pay for the Obama's oldest daughter, Malia to take 20 friends of hers down to Mexico for Spring Break, along with 20 of her friends?

And why in the world are they in Mexico, an extremely dangerous country, instead of bringing tourist dollars to some hard hit American city?

From ABC News: White House: Malia Obama Safe From Earthquake in Mexico
Malia Obama is safe and out of harm’s way following an earthquake in Mexico today, where the president’s eldest daughter is on vacation.

“In light of today’s earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger,” the first lady’s communications director Kristina Schake said in a written statement.

A strong 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck beach resort towns and Mexico’s capitol Tuesday afternoon, with no injuries reported.

Reports that Malia, 13, was traveling in Mexico for spring break with friends first surfaced Monday. As always, the White House asked journalists not to report on the Obama children and several media outlets later scrubbed stories they had posted Monday about the first daughter’s vacation.

The White House repeated that request today, asking that “the media respect the privacy and security of the Obama children and not report on or photograph the girls when they are not with their parents.”
