Morals Don't = God

A woman called Rush today, an Independent, who said she, and apparently her family, will be voting for Rick Santorum. Her reasoning:
Rick Santorum is who we're backing because we need someone like him. We need morals back in America. We need God back in America.

Now - don't get me wrong. I'm very grateful to be living in a country that has as its history the Judeo/Christian religion. Women in the West have it so much better than their sisters in the East - although that has to be quantified. Women who don't live in Orthodox religious Christian or Jewish households have it so much better than anyone else. Let's not forget there are Christians who do think women belong in the home and nowhere else, and god forbid they should be put in charge of boys - like that one religious school that wouldn't let a female referee referee a game...

But the point I'm making is, we don't need "God back in America." We do need morals. The two aren't inclusive.

What we need is humanism - the belief that mankind, as a whole, has the ability to reach perfection and must strive toward that goal.

Indeed, you might say that atheists - who are humanists - are more moral than Christians, because we "do right" because we know it's right, not because we're scared of going to some sizzling hot hell if we do bad (unless we make a deathbed repentence and bequeath all our money to the church, which ensures salvation, eh?)
