My report: Why all the violence?

When I visited the Michael Savage site yesterday, I came across an article about a burglar who had broken the window of someone's car, stolen the bike within, rode it a little ways, then apparently took all his clothes off and hid in some bushes. He was found by three civilians who made a citizen's arrest and held him in an armlock - without beating him up - until the police showed up. He was later sentenced to 12 years in jail, as he'd had a host of criminal convictions prior to this.

Now this guy is suing these three men for "rough citizen's arrest".

The Tampa Bay paper that is reporting this has a comment system, and this is representative of those comments:

"Personally I believe they should have built the bloody snot out of this dirtball."

Well, then he'd really have had something to sue them for. This same guy would probably be outraged if cops beat the snot out of him, but if civilians do it it's okay? What about the many, many times citizens have caught, not the perpetrator, but some innocent schmuck in the wrong place at the wrong time? I'm thinking of those cases where some guy sees a hit and run accident, gets out to help the victim, and then is swarmed by a crowd of people and stomped into a coma because they think he's the one who ran over the kid, and the fact that he stopped and tried to help makes no difference.

If citizens can capture a criminal on their own, more power to them, but they need to hold him secure and not beat him up, because if they do, and if they accidently kill him, they'll go on trial for murder! It's just common sense!

Another common comment:

"Obama has destroyed our legal system and will continue to populate the Supreme Court with hooligans."

Oh please. Our legal system was destroyed long before Obama took office. Incidents of criminals suing their victims - and winning - have gone on for many years. Indeed, its even worse in England, where if a homeowner tries to defend his home from burglars, he's the one who goes to jail, and they are freed!

In the US, this is the "tort" system. Lawyers make millions by suing everyone under the sun should there be an accident, and companies usually pay off on this blackmail because it will cost them more to defend themselves then it will to just pay off the lowlifes.
