CBSSports.com has an article tonight on "Panthers cut Wilson, arrested last week for pot."
There are only 10 comments so far...but all of them say the same thing. "Pot should be legal. Alcohol causes more deaths per year than marijuana has done since its existence."
And that might well be true...but that shouldn't be the point.
The point is that the NFL has rules. Among them is: don't take drugs - whether it be marijuana or something harder.
And I'm thinking...why is that such a hard rule to follow? You're playing a game for a living, you're making more money in a year than most people make in a lifetime...why is it so hard to follow that rule, and put your drugging on hold for the 5-10 years of your career?
Is it because athletes always get a pass, from grade school upwards - at least, good athletes do? So they are all taught that the rules that apply to others don't apply to them?
And let's face it. The Panthers may have let Wilson go - but if he's a good player (the only teams I pay attention to are the Vikings, the Packers and the Bears, so I'm not familiar with him)some other team will pick him up. I mean, Albert Hainesworth has just been hired again, for God's sake!
So he may lose a couple of weeks pay...then it will be life as usual for him. And a salutory lesson for other athletes who come after him.
