Mark Steyn Subbed for Rush Today

I listened to Steyn for only a few minutes today - but he had some good stuff to say. It's a pity his shows aren't transcribed as Rush's are - he got in some good zings at the Occupy "City" people.

On the other hand, while it's true that Rush and other conservatives are dismissing these people as college students and grads who just don't want to have to pay their student loans, some of what they say does make sense. (Well, some of what practically everybody says does make sense.)

Rush and conservatives think we need less regulation. They think big business will just follow the laws even if there is no oversight to make sure they do so. But really - we are all human, and if any business thinks it can flout rules with impunity, it will do so.

What we need are regulations that *make sense* and are *competently enforced." It is those two requirements that seem to be missing from most regulations.

Yesterday Rush shared the story about a windfarm that had shut down because one single bat, of a threatened species of bat, had been found dead at the foot of one of the windmills.

Should a business that provides energy and, presumably, gainful employment to people, be shut down because a bat species is threatened? I'm all for saving the "exotic animals" - wolves, mountain lions, etc - I'd love to be able to save their habit! - but bats?

Well, bats eat insects...and insects bite people and give them diseases much more often than bats do....
