It's Easier to Count the Number of Countries Where We Don't Have A Military Presence

I had mentioned yesterday that Mark Steyn had some good stuff to say - in the few minutes that I listened to him yesterday, when he subbed for Rush.

One of the things he pointed out was that there are about 250 countries in the world, and the US has some kind of military presence in about 200! And while we have been responsbile for the defense of South Korea, North Korea managed to get nuclear arms...indeed most belligerant countries in the Middle East have nuclear armament now which we were unable to stop...for all our vaunted military power.

(It's certainly true that when we and Russia had the bomb, there was no real chance that either one of us would ever use it - we had too much to lose. But in the Middle East where one's religion dictates that if you kill folks you get to go to heaven...there are no such guarantees.)

I also think about this each time I read through the schedule of our Secretary of State and her diplomatic corps. They travel all around the world, giving out our tax dollars to all and sundry. Which would be fine if we got any respect out of the mix, but it never seems like we do...
