HuffPost Hit Piece on Rush

This was posted on the Huffington Post on March 16, and I hadn't seen it. The head line says, Rush Limbaugh Mocks Japan Quake Refugees.

Of course they're taking it completely out of context. Rush has had nothing but admiration for the Japanese and the fact that there's been no looting, for example, but he mocks everyone who recycles.

In his larger response to the tragedy in Japan, this was just a very minor blip, yet those folks who just read the headline will get the wrong impression.

(Having said that, it is annoying that he does have to insult reporters - particularly the female ones. I never said he wasn't a male chauvanist. And of course this gives the lie that he talks "only on the issues" - he gets in his personal digs too. Which is a pity.

Rush Limbaugh Mocks Japan Quake Refugees (VIDEO)
Rush Limbaugh laughed about Japanese refugees recycling after the earthquake that struck the country on his Tuesday show.

A caller asked Limbaugh, "If these are the people that invented the Prius, have mastered public transportation, recycling, why did Mother Earth, Gaia if you will, hit them with this disaster?"

Limbaugh called this an "interesting question," and played a clip of ABC's Diane Sawyer reporting from a shelter in Japan. In the clip, Sawyer is surprised that the refugees in the shelter have maintained a recycling program. Limbaugh first mocked Sawyer, doing an impression of her and saying that "she sounds like she saw her husband for the first time in six months." He then turned to his caller's question.

"He's right," Limbaugh said. "They've given us the Prius. Even now, refugees are recycling their garbage." Here, he began to laugh, continuing, "and yet, Gaia levels them! Just wipes them out!"

This angle has been something of a theme for Limbaugh; last week, he wondered if environmentalists would "cheer" the quake. [Because it looks like it's going to destroy nuclear power.]

Rush does mischaracterize the Gaia movement. He tries to make it seem like these people think not just that the Earth is alive, but that is conscious of what's going on on its surface - so why would it have an earthquake close to Japan and destroy all this stuff when Japan is in the midst of a green movement?

Of course Gaaists do not think the Earth is alive in that way - having consciousness. Indeed, it's interesting that on BBC Radio 7 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio7/) there is a radio program right now called When The Earth Screams, based on a short story about Professor Challenger that Arthur Conan Doyle (of Sherlock Holmes fame) wrote in the late 1800s! about Challenger also believing the Earth is alive - but not conscious of the gnats on its back, and he digs down into the earth in order to find a nerve to poke, to get the Earth to be aware of its passengers. The program ends a bit lamely, Challenger and his companion are just blown to the surface of the earth by an angry blast from the entity, and that's where it ends... but it's interesting that it should be produced now...
