Business Owners? Trust No One

I was thinking back to my post of yesterday, in which I commented that Pepsi - and other large businesses - were going to be forced to hire people with felony records (that were mostly minorities) which is just ridiculous. The government has no business telling businesses that they must hire minorities just because they're felons (thereby punishing minorities who have played it by the rules all their lives...)

However, having said that, it must be admitted that running background checks on people and only hiring people with clean records is going to keep your business safe. Many's the person who's led an exemplary life, til one day they step into a casino, get the gambling bug, and a year later need to start stealing to feed the habit. And the news is rife with folks - mostly whites - who have just been arrested after embezzling from their businesses for decades.

Which doesn't change the fact that if businesses don't want to hire people with prison records, they shouldn't have to.

But in any event, that's why every business should have the dictum - trust no one. Have two or three safeguards in place to prevent people from stealing from you. After all, it is never the newbie who is in a position to steal millions of dollars, it's always someone who'se been with a company for several years and has the implicit trust of his employers.
