What is the Task Force on 21st Century Policing?

http://www.cops.usdoj.gov/policingtaskforce

(COPS stands for Community Oriented Policing Services)

On December 18, 2014, President Barack Obama signed an Executive Order establishing the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The Task Force seeks to identify best practices and make recommendations to the President on how policing practices can promote effective crime reduction while building public trust and examine, among other issues, how to foster strong, collaborative relationships between local law enforcement and the communities they protect.

The Task Force was directed to provide an initial report on recommendations to the President by March 2, 2015.

From their website:

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) is the component within the U.S. Department of Justice dedicated to the concept that trust and mutual respect between police and the communities they serve is critical to public safety. This concept is the foundation of “community policing,” and ensures that police and community stakeholders partner in solving our nation's crime challenges. Community policing is a law enforcement philosophy that focuses on community partnerships, problem-solving and organizational transformation. The COPS Office mission is to advance public safety through community policing.

When police and communities work together, they more effectively address underlining issues, change negative patterns, and focus resources. The COPS Office plays a critical role in executing the Attorney General's Smart on Crime Initiative by focusing on fairer enforcement, crime prevention, and the improvement of relationships with minority populations.

The COPS Office is committed to helping the field advance the field. Over the last 20 years, the COPS Office has pioneered crime analysis through the funding of community policing officers, resources, training, and technical assistance. The COPS Office partners with law enforcement, businesses and other Federal agencies to enhance policing activities and outcomes. Please visit our Resource Center and the Grants and Funding page to learn more about our current resources.
