Rush has talked about this a few times. Whenever someone makes a "gaffe" - or at least what other people consider to be gaffes, they fix it by giving money to the people they've offended.
The president of Harvard, when asked why there were so few female mathematicians, suggested that women just weren't very good at math. Wrong answer. Although he apologized, it was not good enough. He was fired, and Harvard established a foundation to encourage more women to get into math. [Why aren't there more women mathematicians? Pilots? etc. Well, because societal mores still hold girls down. Girls are taught from the get-go that they must have a boyfriend, and that the only way to get a boyfriend is to not beat him in any subject....]
I was just listening to Kevin Millar on Intentional Talk. He was saying that in order to "get through this", Ozzie Guillen has to form a foundation - i.e., give money to the Cuban community so they'll forgive him. Presumably a foundation that will let poor Cuban kids attend Marlins games for free.
I suppose this wouldn't have been a big deal if Guillen had still been coaching in Chicago...or some place without a large Cuban population. Then maybe he'd have been safe...would have just faced Cuban picketers whenever his team visited the Miami Marlins.
But since his team is actually based in Miami.... a city with so many Cubans in it that the headline of the newspaper is not "Guillen offends Cuban-Americans" but rather "Guillen offends Miamians" and since Guillen was serious when he made his comments, and can't make the excuse that he was drunk or trying to make a joke to shut up a heckler, he really does like Castro and what he's done to Cuba.
And Cuban-Americans apparently realize this. So will money be enough, or will they insist he be fired? Hopefully they won't insist that he never work again...but you never know.
