History Sunday: Preamble to the US Constitution

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.


Who wrote the Preamble, and the rest of the Constitution?

The entire Constitution was written over the course of about six weeks in draft form. At that time, it was turned over to a style committee for its final language. This committee was headed by Pennsylvania's Gouverneur Morris. The proceedings of the Style Committee were not recorded, so no one knows for sure who wrote the preamble.
